BMW Unveiled Vision Next 100, Prototype That Offers Glimpse At Brand's Future
|   Friday, March 11, 2016
This year the Bavarian manufacturer BMW is celebrating 100 years of history - on March 7, 1916 the company was included in the commercial register. To mark this jubilee BMW has created a unique concept called VISION NEXT 100 which concerns the future 100 years of the brand.

Although it looks futuristic, the concept is reminiscent of prototypes in the early 90s of the last century, such as Lamborghini Portofino, both in silhouette and by way of opening its doors.
An element inspired by classic BMWs is the double vertical mangle. Also, the most spectacular element is the covered wheels, the ultimate goal of designers being to develop a concept with a drag coefficient as low as possible.

The new appearance is part of a family of four concepts that the BMW Group will present this year for each of the brands owned- BMW, Rolls-Royce, Mini and BMW division motorcycle – each will benefit from one such "dedication " in the coming months, thanks to the engineers and designers of the group.

The BMW Vision Next 100 concept is a four-door coupe, 4.9 m long with an outstanding drag coefficient of just 0.18. The wings of the car have panels composed of diamond-shaped elements that are mobile. Thus, the wing panels are a flexible casing which changes shape depending on how the wheels are pivoted. The Bavarian manufacturer calls this feature "Alive Geometry".

However, the BMW Vision Next 100 does not necessarily shock with the design elements of its body, but through its technical solutions. It shows how to transform the driving experience once cars will be able to drive themselves. It shows how a human driver interacts with a car possesing its own intelligence.

Even though the shape of the cars is what attracts the eye, the BMW Vision Next 100 was designed from the inside out. According to the statements by Adrian van Hooydonk, chief designer for the Bavarian brand, the starting point was the futuristic interpretation of the systems though which passengers interact with the car.

Thus, the butterfly doors are opened automatically when the key approaches the vehicle, seats and steering wheel automatically retract and reposition to ease access, and closing the doors is done by gently swabbing the BMW emblem on the steering wheel. All commands positions are customized according to the driver.

This information is stored in a digital memory access key and the two driving modes - Boost and Ease. On Ease mode we have a machine that uses implicit ambient light and space to create a relaxing atmosphere, on the Boost mode, the interior changes its shape: the steering wheel and center console approaches the driver and the electronic brain of the car focuses on its sporty alternative.

For other road users to see what mode the car is running, Boost or Ease mode, the radiator grille, dual headlights and L-shaped taillights act as a communication tool, illuminating in different colors, depending on the selected mode.

The most interesting element of the interior is the complete lack of buttons and classic display that are on today's cars. If other concepts have integrated buttons in high resolution screens, which they consider the future of the automotive industry, BMW takes a step forward and turns all screens in a head-up display that is projected on the windshield.
