Skoda presented in April a concept from which the first series electric model in the brand's history will be developed: a compact SUV.
Skoda officially entered the dance ring for electric cars. The Czech manufacturer presented the first official sketches of the Vision E concept, which was presented in a world premiere at the Shanghai Auto Show, which opened its doors in April. The new prototype offers a first look at the production model with which Skoda will debut in the electric car industry in 2019.
Vision E foreshadows a compact SUV, the size slightly smalelr than the current Kodiaq, the model with seven seats. The Vision E concept stands in size between the VW Tiguan and Kodiaq.
Skoda Vision E foreshadows three novelties from the brand's future, providing guidelines on electric propulsion, autonomous driving and possible debut in the segment of the coupe SUV.
Skoda has announced that until 2025 it will launch five models with pure electric propulsion, registered in various market segments. They will be built on the MBE platform of the Volkswagen Group. The electrification process will start in 2019 when Skoda will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Skoda Superb model. Also, the first Skoda model, 100 percent electric, will follow a year later.
These confirmations accompany the Skoda Vision concept's reveal, which was presented to the public for the first time at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show (19th to 28th April).
It is a 5-door coupe SUV with a length of 4.645 meters and a wheelbase of 2.850 meters. It is therefore a little shorter than a BMW X4 (4.671 meters), but has a longer wheelbase than its Bavarian counterpart (2.810 meters). The Skoda Vision E is a very relevant concept for the future because it has a 225 kW electric propulsion, as well as technologies that provide next level features for autonomous driving.
So, the Vision E represents both a milestone on Skoda's road to make its first SUV coupe that also meets the technological standards required for proper delivery by the Czech manufacturer in the coming years.
The propulsion system consists of two electric motors, which provide all-wheel drive and a range of 500 km, while reaching a maximum speed of 180 km / h.
Skoda points out recent studies that foreshadow the fact that by 2030 about 15 percent of new cars will be able to drive themselves. As a result, Skoda made a first step in this direction through the Vision E concept.
Specifically, the car is equipped with several video cameras and sensors that constantly monitor the traffic situation and is capable of a wide range of functions.
This means that it can drives itself in heavy traffic, switch on autopilot on the highway, knows how to maintain the same lane, and has capable cornering abilities too. Furthermore, the Skoda Vision E, can perform overtaking maneuvers without driver intervention, can find parking space and park alone or depart its parking place by itself.
