The first generation SEAT Ibiza appeared 33 years ago, having a design signed ItalDesign Giugiaro and engine developed by Porsche engineers. All Ibiza generations, taken together, has been produced in 5.4 million copies. Now, the car manufacturer unveiled at Barcelona the fifth generation SEAT Ibiza.
The new design was inspired from the Leon's current generation, without bringing too many new stylistic fireworks, even though it would be a smaller copy of its older brother. The front optical blocks are now closer to the triangular shape, being available for the first time in full-LED version, while the rear lights come with the same triangular LED accents and are exacerbated by one of the side ridges. The new SEAT Ibiza will come in four interpretations: Reference, Style, FR, and Xcellence.
Most importantly, however, is that the SEAT Ibiza new generation now comes with totally different proportions and with a dynamic silhouette that is stretched and lowered. Therefore, this makes it more attractive – even the small triangular window in front of the front door has disappeared! Note that the dynamic silhouette is nothing but an optical illusion, ingeniously disguised by designers!
In fact, Seat Ibiza is 2 mm shorter and 1 mm lower than the previous generation while winning some 87 mm in width and 95 mm for wheelbase (2,564 mm). The luggage compartment volume was also increased, reaching 355 liters (+63 liters).
All of these are due the new platform MQB A0, so the new Ibiza is the first model in the Volkswagen Group which receives this platform.
Thanks to the new platform, the wheels are moved closer to the corners of the car, which offers the possibility of installing larger wheels (up to 18 inches), and last but not least, allows an increase for interior space. The latter was increased significantly, adding 35 mm for the rear passengers' feet, 24 mm on height for the front occupants and 17 mm in height for rear seat occupants.
The seats have added 42 mm in width. The track widths also increased by 60 mm for the front axle and 48 mm for the rear axle. According to SEAT, thanks to the new chassis and a 30 percent increase in the torsional stiffness of the bodywork, the Ibiza fifth generation will have a very dynamic behavior, providing a worthy comfort.
The interior also got a new design, although simplistic. Its innovation comes from the insertion of a contrasting color from the middle of the board.
Instead, the new optional multimedia system with 8-inch display is centrally located together with tactile buttons, modern connectivity like Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Mirror Link and even WLAN Hot Spot. The Beats audio system, offers 7 speakers and a 300 watt amplifier. In its basic equipment form all Ibiza models will have an autonomous braking system with pedestrian detection. As an option lane keeping support system with guided steering wheel in autonomous regime will be offered.
Powertrain lineup includes gasoline units 1.0 TSI (95 or 115 hp) and EVO 1.5 TSI (150 hp), and diesel units 1.6 TDI (80, 95 or 115 hp). A version powered with compressed natural gas (CNG) will be available called TGI 1.0 (90 hp). The engines will be coupled to manual gearboxes in 5 or 6 steps or a DSG robotic box, dual-clutch with 7 steps.
The new generation SEAT Ibiza will be disclosed to the public at the Geneva Motor Show, which will take place in early March, and its sales will start in June 2017.
