The best-selling model on American soil, the Ford F-150, is being renewed: new grille, new rims and, most importantly, a diesel engine that already showed its muscles under the hood of the Land Rover TDV6.
The success in the US market enjoyed by the Ford F series is huge: up to September last year over 595,000 copies were sold, more than 170,000 over the second pick-up from the top, Chevrolet Silverado. Moreover, for the past 4 decades, the F series is the best-selling American pick-up with more than 26 million copies sold.
Although it appeared three years ago, the current generation of the best-selling pick-up in the US for the past 40 years, the Ford F-150 is undergoing a mid-career facelift, unveiled at the Auto Show in Detroit. Despite the original appearance compared to his older brothers, the F-150 has been unified with the latter.
So now the new Ford F-150 facelift has the same “face,” with optical blocks in the shape of the letter “C” joined with horizontal calendar, which we can see on the F-250, F-350 and F- 450 models. The same character was on the legendary pick-up Ford F-700 too, by the way. Depending on the version, the new version comes in seven different interpretations, among which we have chromed units, or painted in the bodywork's color with many inlets or a smaller incision area.
The interior has not changed, instead the comfort level has been improved thanks to the audio system B & O Play, CarPlay Apple and Android Auto connectivity, internet connection and WiFi hotspot 4G LTE (up to 10 devices).
Also, security has been improved thanks to autonomous braking system with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise-control.
The cherry on top is that Ford decided to finally complete the range of engines with a turbo-diesel, the first in the series history. “The Chosen One” is the fruit of collaboration between Ford and PSA-Citroen Peugeot: a V6 engine with a displacement of 3 liters which underpins the Land Rover Discovery SdV6.
Ford has not given any official value for the power or torque of the unit, but in the British model's case it develops 256 hp and 600 Nm of torque.
Contrasting to that model, which transmit power to all four wheels through an automatic gearbox with 8 stages, it is possible in the case of the American model that the engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox, but nothing is certain yet. The combination of the diesel powertrain's introduction into the offer and the growing demand for pick-ups in Europe could open new horizons for the big pick-up.
Also, fans of gasoline motorizations get a new V6 engine with a displacement of 3.3 liters, which replaced the old engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters. It will provide power and torque values very close to the previous V6, in the vicinity of 282 hp and torque of 343 Nm. The base engine, a V6 with a displacement of 2.7 liters, has reached its second generation and is now connected to a gearbox with 10 steps. The flagship's V8 engine with a displacement of five liters receives a boost in power and torque, but Ford does not specify the final values.
Furthermore, the facelift version offers an impressive number of 16 equipment levels, together with redesigned front and back optical blocks with LED technology, retouched bumpers and six new rims models.
The official launch will take place this autumn, while the diesel variant will go into production in 2018.
