Mercedes is preparing many versions for the new C-Class generation. On the list there are two hybrid derivatives, the most efficient diesel engine in the segment and, of course, the new C63 AMG expected to offer nearly 500 horsepower.
In the middle of this month, just in time to celebrate 20 years after the onset of the first C-Class, Mercedes launched the newest generation model in the mid-range, a model that aims to beat the benchmark BMW Series 3 relying on the technological advances of its older brother, the S-Class.
Mercedes has announced that three types of engines will be offered by the German model right from the beginning: the C180 and C200 gasoline versions, equipped with 156, respectively 184 horsepower plus the C220 BlueTEC diesel, with only 170 horsepower.
The year 2014 will bring other powertrains in the C-Class engine range which have been talked about in the official press release: a hybrid diesel and a hybrid gasoline, as well as a more powerful diesel with 204 horsepower and 500 Nm responsible for the propulsion on the BlueTEC C250 version. This motorization will have the mission to earn on its side customers currently shopping for the BMW 325d. But we must not forget the fact that BMW is equipped with a 218 horsepower engine.
Those who prefer more powerful petrol engines will receive in 2014 a new version of the C250. It will be animated by a unit with 4 cylinders displacing 2 liters and capable of delivering 210 horsepower and a torque of 350 Nm.
Also in 2014, Mercedes intends to achieve the most efficient C-Class in its history. An extremely economical version, with low emissions, of the BlueTEC C220 will be launched. It will have the same 2.1-liter turbodiesel engine and 170 horsepower, but will be equipped with low rolling resistance tires and come with an aerodynamic package separately. The result will be the best environmental emissions on the premium segment, estimated at less than 100 g / km.
All engines enumerated until now will be ordered with a new Mercedes automatic gearbox, the 9G-Tronic transmission, which, as the name suggests, will have 9 steps.
The future C300 BlueTEC Hybrid, the hybrid diesel offered for the first time in the C-Class range, will benefit from the 2.1-liter turbo diesel and 204 horsepower (found on the BlueTEC C250), but will be assisted by an electric motor of 29 hp and 250 Nm.
The Mercedes C300 Plug-in Hybrid, the other hybrid version of the German model, is expected in 2015 and will involve the presence of a petrol unit. In this case we are talking about a plug-in hybrid, consisting of a 2.0 liter engine with direct injection making 250 horsepower and assisted by an electric unit of 68 horses.
The year 2014 will end with the release of a very important version for the new C-Class, the performance derivative C63 AMG. The model will benefit from the services a new twinturbo V8 engine capable of delivering between 455 and 495 horsepower, more than the 431 horsepower of the BMW M3. It will be associated with the current dual-clutch transmission, 7G-Tronic, and will find its place on several AMG models.
