Bentley believes that electric cars have a future that includes the luxury segment, and presented the EXP 12 Speed 6e concept at Geneva, a model which recharges its batteries using induction.
Green propulsion is beginning to be considered more and more by premium manufacturers and Bentley is an example. The British manufacturer will launch a series of plug-in hybrid versions in its range of models, the first on the list being the Bentley Bentayga in 2018. Until then, they made a design exercise by launching at the Geneva Motor Show an electric concept.
We were not provided with technical specifications for the electric propulsion, Bentley only saying that its system will allow induction charging, and that will in turn provide the car the ability to travel distances such as between London and Paris or between Milano and Monaco with a single charge of electricity.
In its good tradition, Bentley will put modern technology into an exceptional level of quality and manufacturing. The EXP 12 Speed 6e concept foreshadows both the exterior design and the interior design, as well as the aesthetic direction of future Bentley models. Moreover, the new Continental GT range will be clearly related stylistically with the EXP 12 Speed 6e as recent spy photos leave us to understand.
In the interior, we notice a new infotainment system control interface. Virtually the entire central console is made of a curved piece of glass that includes an OLED screen.
It controls the navigation systems, entertainment and climate settings.
Also, on the steering wheel, there are glass slides that take the place of controls for media systems, navigation, communication and choice of various adjustments to the car.
The design of the steering wheel is a special one with the top cut off. At the ends of the two arms, there is a button: one triggers the boost function for engine performance and the other activates a speed limit for urban environments.
The passengers are able to access features like social media, email and entertainment via the touch interface, integrated on the basis of the dashboard. Various applications that transform the car into a kind of valet or digital concierge service can also be found. However, digitization replaced the classic mirrors. The concept is provided for this purpose with lateral video cameras.
Other details of the Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e concept are inserts of copper alluding at the electric propulsion, the illuminated inscription ‘6e’ on the front grille, air intakes on the hood, and the subtle hiding of the charging socket behind the license plate.
All these elements and refinement amenities which equip the Bentley EXP 12 Speed 6e concept are designed to keep the brand values and charm in the context of the looming technological revolution through which the automotive industry will inevitably pass.
Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley chairman and chief executive, declared that “The EXP 12 Speed 6e is a concept to show that Bentley is defining electric motoring in the luxury sector, with the appropriate technology, high quality materials and refinement levels you’d expect from a true Bentley. This concept enables us to engage with luxury customers and gather feedback on our approach. Bentley is committed to offering an electric model in its future portfolio and we are interested to receive feedback on this concept.”
