The introduction of the refurbished Camry in the market was expected to give a tough competition to its rivals in the US where it is the top selling car. However, the recent floods in Thailand and a stronger currency have added to the building up of a lot of anxiety.
There was a significant decrease in the overall expected earnings of the Toyota Company in the first week of December, falling to less than 50% of the actual one. They attributed it to the devastating floods in Thailand where the 2012 model of Camry, was produced with the intention of bridging the economic loss caused by the recent earthquake in Japan.
Maryann Keller, the owner of Maryann Keller & Associates, analyses that with respect to the design, Sonata of Hyundai has the lead in the market, followed by Optima of Kia. She is also of the opinion that Toyota is competitive in the medium sized sedans but neither is it better or worse compared to its counterparts.
As the events unfold, it is being anticipated that General Motors Company would most likely be replacing Toyota this year as the biggest automaker of the world. However, Toyota is striving to keep Camry’s title of the most sold car in the US which has been held for almost thirteen years now.
According to Larry Dominique, the executive vice president of the website TrueCar.com who also led the North American planning department of Nissan Motor Company until recently, Camry is a huge success in the American market and should be exploited to the most to earn major profit and increase its share in market.
With the tough competition given by Hyundai’s Sonata, Kia’s Optima and Ford’s Fusion, Toyota has to price its cars in consideration of the success of its competitors, opined Keller. She further stated that the stakes and profits are now dependent on the margin they get from every vehicle that is sold and not the number sold.
With setbacks in production during the sales of Camry in the US, it has lost 7.3% sales in the year 2011. At the same time, the sales of Sonata has increased by 15% and that of Optima, more than 3% compared to 2010.
Toyota’s profit with respect to the sales of Camry have always been a great secret guarded well. Not even S&P Capital IQ’s analyst have that information.
